Cataract is an age related disease commonly affecting the old age people and old age is sometimes associated with diabetes, hypertension and heart diseases. People affected with heart diseases are usually afraid of any surgery in their body but cataract surgery is very simple and safe in them because it is bloodless and nowadays it is performed under Topical anesthesia ….that means only anesthetic drops are put in the eye before surgery and no injection is given.

Facts about Cataract Surgery in Cardiac Patients

  1. Details of cardiac Medications and heart surgeries (Stenting and Open-heart Surgery) should be shared with the Eye Surgeon
  2. Blood Thinner medicines should be stopped 3-4 days prior to cataract surgery for safety purpose (to avoid intraoperative bleeding) although it is not mandatory in all cases
  3. All other medicines should be continued as before and blood thinners can be started on the next day of surgery in an uneventful surgery
  4. No need of hospitalization and patient can be discharged on the same day on day care basis
  5. Patients can resume their normal activity soon and can go for the morning walk 7 days after surgery
